We have always loved green smoothies, but we got a little tired of chewing on our kale. Sadly, the Ninja was just not making smoothies, but chunkies, as we started calling them and we decided to take a break from them.
A few weeks ago a friend posted that she was selling her Vitamix and we jumped on it! I will be forever grateful because we are now back in the smoothie business and they are smooth and in just a minute!
But, this post isn’t about my new found love for my Vitamix, it’s about what goes into the smoothies….greens.
I really don’t like to have to go to the grocery store more than once a week but the greens were not lasting long in the frig. I also didn’t want to have to buy a lot at once and have it go bad.
So, I decided that my method of leaving it in the bag until I needed it and washing it wasn’t working.
Then the key is getting them dry. I don’t have a handy dandy salad spinner so I had to improvise….I put them in the washer. Yes, that’s right. I put them in on the spin cycle and they came out super dry. Success!
I did rinse the washer out with vinegar first though to make sure there was no soap residue.
Then for good measure I lay them out on towel and then roll it up to get the rest of the moisture out.
I store them in gallon bags with a few paper towels in to suck up any excess moisture.
And now I have greens for the week that don’t get slimy.
I know, nothing earth shattering but my kale now looks great and lasts much longer.
How do you store your greens?
