As a mom, I know how easy it is to let little things goes, as far as taking care of yourself. It seems there is a constant list of needs to be met and you simply put your needs on the back burner.

“I’ll just do that later” but by the time later rolls around you are too tired.

It is time to stop setting yourself aside. You are no good to your family if you are run down and running on fumes. It’s true. I know you know this, but you need to hear and let it sink in, you are no good to your family if you are run down.

I’ve been there and it’s not a pretty or fun place to be. It’s frustrating and the longer you keep running on empty, the longer it is going to take to repair yourself.

I also know, from experience, that if things are not simple, we just are not going to keep up with them or you start to feel better so you phase out the things your body still needs.

There is an overwhelming amount of health information out there today. I am thankful for it, but as a tired mom, sometimes reading it all just makes me feel worse. My brain can’t wrap around it and I go comfort myself with some chocolate. (Hey! No judging. 😉 )

My goal is to help you find a few simple things to add to your day that will make a difference in your wellness. It may not be a drastic, fast change, but overall, it will help your body to function.

I also know money is tight and these tips are easy on the budget, I promise. I know how important that is!

Start with one thing and add more as you get used to your new routine.

 1.) Dry skin brushing

This is probably one of my favorites to recommend to moms, or anyone for that matter. All you need a natural bristle brush and a few minutes before your shower or bath. Brushing helps move lymph, which also helps stimulate the liver to do it’s job.

I can tell when I don’t skin brush and I am amazed at the difference in my stretch marks.

I like this brush. Mine has held up for over a year and I like the shape of it.

2.) Drink enough water

It’s harder in the winter, but getting enough water in helps your entire body work better. It helps flush your system of toxins, it aids in digestion and it really helps for healthy looking skin.

If this is difficult for you, start with just getting a quart a day in and moving up from there.

My goal is as gallon a day.

3.) Get to bed on time and rest at least 20 minutes during the day

I will fully admit that this is the most difficult for me. I am a night owl.

However, the body needs sleep to rest and repair. It can’t do that when I’m not sleeping.

For adrenal health, just 20 minutes a day, with your feet up, can help give them a bit of gentle rest.

Grab yourself a book or if you have littles sit and read to them for quiet time. Quiet time is a good thing for everyone. It often resets the mood. Put a calming oil in the diffisuer, relaxing music and have everyone wind down for a bit.

4.) Epsom salts baths 

This is how I like to end my day. I get a big glass of water or kombucha, grab a book and fill the tub with water, epsom salts and essential oils. I can feel every ounce of tension melt from my body as I sink in.

I go to bed relaxed and feeling ready to sleep.

Not only is this good to help relax, it also can help you detox, especially if skin brush before.

5.) Be kind to your liver

This can be a bit different for everyone, but a simple way to help is to add lemon to your water. This will help the liver flush out.

A lot of gentle liver herbs come in capsule or tea form. I like milk thistle or dandelion leaves. You can herbs that are big stronger, but we are talking gentle as you start.

Supporting your liver is important and especially important around your cycle to help flush out those hormones.

I know that some of these tips don’t seem earth shattering, but with consistent use, they can really make an impact on our health. They are also the building blocks to help get you over the hump to moving on to your next health goals.

6.) Bone broth

Bone broth is one real food staple that you should work into your diet. Not only will it provide you with minerals that your body needs, it will also help in healing your gut.

It is also very economical. We have a roasted chicken one night for dinner (and usually at least one lunch). I throw the bones in the same roasting pan that I cooked the chicken, add water and put in the oven over night. I add some veggies in the next day and by that evening I have a few quarts of broth. You can then use it for soup or bag it up for the freezer.

Taking care of yourself is important. I know I had to get over the notion I was being selfish. Good health is a gift and we have to maintain it so we have it for life.

    This is great advice. I wish I didn’t neglect my own health for so long. I am going to work on the 20 minutes of rest/quiet time a little more. Thanks for the great post!

      I know how it is. You can do it…it will be good for your entire family! Yours girls will learn that momma takes care of herself and they will follow that lead.

    Jess this is such an awesome post. I need to add #1 to my routine this year. I’m pretty good with the water … but sometimes I don’t drink as much as I would like during the winter because I forget since it’s so cold. I do my best with sleep, but I’m not always perfect at it. It’s hard sometimes with two littles who wake at different times … and trying to fit time in with hubby at the end of the night. Great idea on #4 and #5. I love bone broth and do my best to fit it into our daily diet. Thanks again for this great post!

    Taking care of yourself is hard sometimes when life gets busy. But if we don’t take care of ourselves, that just makes things even harder! I’m really good about drinking water. I have my big bottle that I drag around all day. All I have to do is drink two of those a day and I’ve at my quota. I’m fairly good to my liver, too. I don’t drink alcohol and rarely drink soda, so I’m good on that one. I’ll have to try the skin brushing, though. That one sounds interesting.

    I’m doing the others; but I like the suggestion to start with milk thistle and dandelion leaf tea. Yes, herbs in this way are gentle and work to support our systems over time. Love all your suggestions, so important. Sleep! <3 :)

    I never seem to be able to make it to bed on time…that’s something I wish I could do. Looking forward to a good night sleep when my kids get older LOL
