Freezing Blueberries

It’s blueberry time! Woohoo!

Who doesn’t love picking blueberries in 90 degree, hot, humid weather? (My kids, that’s for sure!)

SimplyHealthyHomeActually, they are the ones that asked to go picking. It’s part of the summer tradition. We pick at a farm just about five miles up the road. The berries are big and juicy. We love them!

We also love to pick enough berries for the winter. I know some people don’t think it’s worth the effort, but I do! I am buying local produce at a good price. I know that it is hasn’t been stored and sprayed with whatever  just so it will last in stores.

And freezing blueberries is easy! All you need to do is recruit some people to pick with you. (Or leave your troops at home and go pick by yourself….it might actually go quicker! It won’t be as fun though.)

SimplyHealthyHomeThen I lay down towels on the kitchen table or counter and dump the berries out. I weed out any bad berries, leaves or green ones that may have ended up in the bucket.

And here is my secret, I don’t wash them. Yikes! I know. The natural coating of the berry helps them keep longer in the freezer though. (All the more reason to buy local!)

Then it’s just a matter of storing them in gallon sized freezer bags. Make sure you label your bags with what it is and the year. I know it sounds silly as you can clearly tell they are berries, but you may never know what will come up.

How to freeze blueberries

That’s how easy it to have great berries all winter long. I use them in smoothies, in oatmeal, muffins for baking and my kids love them just frozen as treats.

I also love that is a summer tradition for my kids. I love making memories for them. I also love that they know where their food is coming from and are part of the process of preserving them for the winter. It’s a good life lesson.

What are your favorite summer traditions?
